Department of Economics of Gokhale Memorial
Girls' College has been admitting students for Economics under
3-year B.Sc. Degree Courses offered by the University of
Calcutta since the academic year 1984-85. It was as early as in
1957 that the University had extended its affiliation to the
College to teach economics and the subject was taught only as a
General Course from 1957 to 1983 with only two full-time faculty
members, Mrs. Chitra Ghosh and Dr. Lapita Sarkar. Mrs. Ghosh
joined the college in 1959 and retired in 1994. Dr. Sarkar
joined Asutosh College, Kolkata vide recommendation of the West
Bengal College Service Commission as full-time faculty,
temporarily replacing another permanent faculty who had availed
of leave under F.I.P. In 1984 she was appointed as lecturer in a
substantive post in Gokhale Memorial Girls' College and the
journey of this Department commenced taking it from one
significant milestone to another. What began with three students
in 1984-85, Economics Honours went on to become one of the most
sought-after course in the College with increasing number of
students admitted with each passing year.
