Department of Economics of Gokhale Memorial Girls' College has been admitting students for Economics under 3-year B.Sc. Degree Courses offered by the University of Calcutta since the academic year 1984-85. Mrs. Ghosh joined the college in 1959 and retired in 1994. Dr. Sarkar joined Asutosh College, Kolkata vide recommendation of the West Bengal College Service Commission as full-time faculty, temporarily replacing another permanent faculty who had availed of leave under F.I.P. In 1984 she was appointed as lecturer in a substantive post in Gokhale Memorial Girls' College and the journey of this Department commenced taking it from one significant milestone to another. What began with three students in 1984-85, Economics Honours went on to become one of the most sought-after course in the College with increasing number of students admitted with each passing year.
