The Department of Chemistry was founded in the year 1948. Chemistry was taught as an elective subject in science course till 2014. In 2014, the University of Calcutta extended affiliation to teach the Honours course in Chemistry. The first batch of students in the Honours course had been admitted in 2015.

Vision

  1. To impart quality education to the students in the subject of Chemistry
  2. To motivate students for higher studies and to build self-confidence among them
  3. To motivate our students as good academicians and researchers with better conduct and character to take jobs in the field of academia, research and industry.

Mission

  1. To provide sound theoretical and practical knowledge in all branches of chemistry.
  2. To motivate and create interest among students to become self-entrepreneurs
  3. To train our students to excel in teaching, research and expertisein chemistry with the community.
  4. To develop necessary skills required for the grooming chemical industries.

 

Syllabus


 

Prospects

There is immense B.Sc Chemistry scope in India and abroad. Graduates can work in Pharmaceuticals industries, Chemical Analysis and Synthesis, Quality Control and Quality Assurance, Patent practice, Environmental Law, Forensic Science Lab, Plastic companies, Fertilizer producing companies, etc. B.Sc chemistry graduates can also opt for government jobs.
After completing B.Sc in chemistry, students can also go for higher studies like M.Sc or M.Tech in various subjects like Theoretical chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular chemistry, Drug chemistry, Medicinal chemistry, Analytical chemistry, Oil and Pant technology etc. After completing Masters they can also go for research or PhD.

  • Kasturi Kanrar who passed out in 2018 qualified GATE in 2020
